Advice from a Wedding Planner

Alex is one of my nearest and dearest wedding “friendors”. We met several years ago at FrontPorch Farms and now she does full time wedding planning and flowers for her own Westerhouse Weddings. Not only does she have the most fun, uplifting personality but this girl is wicked talented! Working with Alex is always such a treat and I wanted to share some of her tips and tricks for all my friends out there planning a wedding:

  1. What is the biggest unexpected expense that most couples don’t plan for?

Gratuity really trips people up. Especially if it’s not included in the initial quote. Since tipping is usually something that happens at the end of the event, people often forget to budget for it at the beginning.

Another budget mistake I see is that people use budget guides from websites like The Knot. These are not always accurate for the region you are in. They are designed based on national averages! Some areas (like Nashville) have more expensive costs because it’s a destination location.

2. Your biggest tip for newly engaged couples?

First, enjoy these moments! You only do this once and it’s fun to be celebrated.

Second, set a realistic budget before you book a venue!!! Couples often get so excited to start planning and get a date booked that they overlook this advice or try and justify a more expensive venue by saying “we will save in other areas”, but that is a lot harder than you would think.

3. What’s one thing couples can do to ensure they really enjoy the day and are able to soak it in!

Hire professionals. I feel like I preach this all the time but it’s true. If you want to enjoy the day and not worry about anything, hire good professionals that you trust. Do not try to DIY important elements of the wedding that require your attention the day of. (You won’t have time and the burden will fall on your parents or wedding party and then they will be stressed too!) My most relaxed couples are the ones who are able to “let go” and know their team is handling everything so they can be present in the big moments.

4. What are a couple things to look for in a potential photographer?

I think personality is a big factor in choosing your photographer. Most couples don’t realize, but you spend more time with your photographer on wedding day than anyone else! You want this vendor to be someone you enjoy, they make you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and hype you up when you need a little encouragement. Of course photo style and budget are important aspects, but if you feel awkward around your photographer it will definitely show in photos.
